kind of a tard question because I'm sure I'm overlooking something real easy but I can't figure out what. I searched and can't find anything useful - how/what do I have to do to tell emacs I have a pile of fonts installed? right now "m-x list-fontsets" lists a couple basics and that's it. xlsfonts shows a ton (as do other apps) so they're there.

I've tried with and w/o my ~/.emacs, ~/.Xdefaults, ~/.Xresources, I just can get it to find/use anything but these:

Code:
Fontset: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-default
Fontset: -*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-standard
Fontset: -monotype-Courier New-normal-normal-normal-*-14-*-*-*-m-0-fontset-startup

not sure what helpful info to include besides these:

xorg.log:

Code:
[    54.752] (**) FontPath set to:
   /usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled,
   /usr/share/fonts/TTF,
   /usr/share/fonts/corefonts,

As far as I know, there's indeed no "nice" GUI command that would allow to select an Xft font from a list of fonts. You can set the default font in ~/.Xresources:
Code:
Emacs.font: DejaVu Sans Mono-12
or in your ~/.emacs file:
Code:
(set-default-font "DejaVu Sans Mono-12")
The latter command can also be used interactively (M-x set-default-font RET). Auto-completion won't work, though.

You can find some more detailed information in the Gentoo Wiki, http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xft_support_for_GNU_Emacs, or in the Emacs Wiki, http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/XftGnuEmacs.
