Hello all,

I updated portage a little over a week ago (when the 2.2 became stable) and one of my machines has been broken. A bit of background - I keep my portage tree on an NFS server with a read-only mount from my clients. All of my other clients are fine with this, but my main desktop has this issue. The NFS mount is a kerberized NFS4 mount (sec=krb5) if that makes any difference (ie, users without tickets will not be able to read from the mount).

Ok, that aside, here's what I'm getting when I attempt to update anything with a patch:
Code:
>>> Emerging (2 of 31) sys-apps/lm_sensors-3.3.3-r3

... Which looks straight-forward, right? Make sure the patch is in the location it's looking for. So I check:
Code:
rich@basilisk ~ $ ls /mnt/net/portage/sys-apps/lm_sensors/files/lm_sensors-3.3.1-sensors-detect-gentoo.patch
/mnt/net/portage/sys-apps/lm_sensors/files/lm_sensors-3.3.1-sensors-detect-gentoo.patch
Ok... that makes it significantly less simple. The patch is there, why doesn't it find it? Here's my emerge --info
Code:
rich@basilisk ~ $ emerge --info

You have FEATURE=userpriv enabled (I think this was changed to be the default with 2.2), so make sure that the files are readable for the user "portage".

This setting is also on two of my other machines, also using NFS4 with sec=krb5, neither of which is showing problems with portage or emerge. I cannot "su" to the portage user as it's not an interactive account, so I cannot directly verify whether or not that user can access these files, but I see no reason it shouldn't... the file is set to root:root access with the world readable bit set.

EDIT:

This does appear to be an NFS4/Kerberos issue. As a temporary workaround, I turned kerberos off and went to plain NFS4 over IPv6, and it worked fine. There is something about portage 2.2 that is not very happy with kerberos/NFS4, but as none of the information in the portage tree is "sensitive", I may just leave it as plain NFS4 over IPv6 and call it a day. If anyone really cares, maybe a bug report would be called for... but I'm not interested enough to troubleshoot when I can just downgrade to unkerberized portage.

Please do, and include some information regarding the configuration in which it failed, even if you are unsure of why and no longer interested in hunting down that articular bug, someone else might be willing and able to if they knew it existed.

I had the same problem with my remote overlay but not its copy on my local machine. It turned out to be a matter of access privileges of portage user which seems to need r+x privileges. I moved my repo elsewhere, set ownership to portage group my user belongs to and changed privileges to 750. This operation brought my repo back to life since for some time I've been experiencing 'access denied' errors regarding my ebuilds after portage update (which were gone if I ran emerge world -DuNvp as a normal user in whose home dir the ebuild repo was cloned, and then switched back to root; unfortunately it did not work with patches).
