Hello there,

I'm setting up a new computer and since I like Cinnamon (well, I do like the spice, too, but I'm talking about the Gnome 3 fork here) I want to install it on this computer.
Now, would I select the desktop profile or the gnome profile? I think the gnome profile is for gnome 2 still, but I'm not sure. Cinnamon being a gnome 3 fork, it makes sense to assume the gnome profile would be the right choice here. On the other hand, it is not per se gnome, so perhaps the plain desktop profile would be better?

Is there a way to see the difference between the profiles? Or can someone tell me what the differences are and if they matter at all?

Thanks.

Profiles just offer a set of default useflags. In theory you can use any profile and customize it to what you want.
IIRC the gnome profile by now forces systemd (because gnome 3.8.x and higher have a hard dependency on that) while the default desktop profile defaults to openrc.
If I'm not totally mistaken Cinnamon is still based on gnome 3.6.x and therefore may force you to make customizations anyways (e.g. masking higher versions of gtk+ and therefore most other parts of gnome). Since I don't use it anymore this info may be deprecated, taken with a grain of salt and possibly verified before acting... ;)

The Desktop profile will work fine. I'm using Cinnamon right now and as of the recent update (1.8.8.1) I don't have any packages masked for it to work (running gentoo unstable branch). I don't have systemd so that's definitely not required so I'd suggest the desktop profile over the gnome one just to give you more flexibility
