Hi everybody!
I have a Gentoo setup (on a Linux 3.11.1 #2 SMPx86_64) with XDM and in top of it XFce4.
In this morning I cleaned some unused (but installed) packages with "emerge --depclean".
Since then the graphical interface does not use the same look & feel anymore, all the controls looks like standard-style instead of flat--style.
What I mean by standard-style (see the pictures below):
http://snag.gy/dZxBr.jpg
http://snag.gy/92RkB.jpg
For instance, the following controls look standard-style:
http://snag.gy/Fq6VI.jpg
while these one looks flat-style to me:
http://snag.gy/UJZJf.jpg
It happened in the past but I think I managed to fix it by rebuilding I don't remember what gtk+ library (or something).
The "thing" that broke the whole thing must be something from the following packages (I recovered the list with the help of an emerge tool called qlop) :
Sun Oct 6 10:58:48 2013 <<< dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.1-r1

Well, these things are drawn by the "toolkit" and gtk usually is to blame but gtk can also be configured to look different.
What are your USE flags and your make.profile?
What happens if you create a new account and start up there (so we can get a baseline without configs)
My GNOME does not look like what you have at all.... I guess you're right, if things change it gets to be a little thorn that needs to be plucked... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

I remember that I've changed the "icu" flag at the libxml2 library:
dev-libs/libxml2 python -icu
Other flags have not been changed, nor in make.conf or elsewhere.

I've tried to login with different user and the same behaviour seems to take place.
I can post here my make.conf and my poartage/package.{use,keywords} but I don't think they will help much since nothing changed except -icu and the package removal mentioned earlier.
Btw eccerr0r, thanks for your very-very quick reply |

x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce-3.0.1-r200 - that's your problem. Just emerge it again. |

It makes sense but actually it didn't helped. Maybe an existing package needs rebuild, I just don't know which one.
Finally, I guess I have to rebuild the @world, it's not a big deal. I'm just annoyed because I don't understand exactly what's happening and I always like to know why and how.
Thanks guys, all your comments are highly appreciated. |

Search for "-engine" keyword and see what you have installed. Then check the gtkrc file of the theme you use (~/.themes/<theme>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc) for the "engine" keyword to see which one is required for it and make sure you have the engine installed. _________________ GNU/Linux does not stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things. |

Oh, now I see: the problem has something to do with "Style". I just open the Appearance applet (which says "Customize the look of your desktop") and I remarked that initially there was no Style selected (it could mean that before there was something but after my "emerge -depclean" that style was just uninstalled and XFce desktop failed back to "Raleigh" default style).
By moving up-down in the style list the windows/controls look&feel changes instantly and now I get that flat look&feel although not the old one (because I probably just uninstalled unintentionally).
I would like to mention that the engine I have installed is x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce.
Anyway smil3y, you answered my question, now it's clear as a day what I have to do furthermore.
Thank you very much, I consider this topic closed/answered. |
