I expect the answer to this is trivial, but I can't see how I would install gentoo on a system with no video card, such as the intel nuc. can someone point me in the right direction?

It looks like the NUCs have HDMI ports on them and are using on-chip graphics, should be able to deal with it that way? _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Cool, I was kind of suspicious that they don't have video... It would be very odd if you needed to add a USB or thunderbolt or mPCIe video card... but they indeed have HDMI, some can handle multiple monitors too.
I don't represent Newegg but here's a NUC they have. It has two minidisplayports and a HDMI for three monitors. But you should check the specific one you want to get, not all of them have all three. I think the cheapest one does not have mini displayports - it appears to have 2 HDMI with the celeron... which isn't bad... |

Has anyone found one yet that has 3 monitor ports AND an i7? And at least 16g?
I see only i5s.
This would be extremely good for me. |

actually, I'll only use the hdmi during the initial install. after that it'll be a small, low demand server. |

Odd, looks like only the Intel branded NUCs and not the other ones have multiple video ports, and it looks like Intel cancelled their i7 version for some reason... not sure why. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Maybe they melt. But browsing around on newegg for barebones/mini computers, I see that there are 3 machines with "desktop" i7 processors and several more with "mobile" i7s. Not Intel, but at least there's something.
Looking around, I figured out that those nuc form factors didn't hold enough for me so I bumped it up to mini-itx, which is about 7" square motherboards. Then you can get 4 RAM slots, 4 SATAs and support for a decent video card and a real processor. And maybe dual ethernet.
I'm still gonna top $1000 USD but I think one of these has my name on it.

- At least 16G RAM.
This thread made me realize that you can get real processing power in a tiny box. My needs dictate something not quite so tiny, but I'm really glad I stumbled onto this thread. |

Probably. I think all of Intel's NUCs are laptop BGA CPUs...
I guess the mini-itx will have to be the way to go if you want a full i7, but you will need a fan. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Too bad there's not a way to thermally bond the CPU to a giant external heat sink. I was going to mount the thing on the back of the monitor anyway, it would be vertically oriented and would have lots of room for a chimney effect.
I'm sorry I didn't intend to steal the show. There are i7-based barebones systems similar in size to the nuc on newegg, but they're not from intel. |
