I have followed the guides:

http://doc.gabosh.net/howto_Sane_Scanner_Server.html
http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_Installing_USB_Scanner

But as a regular user I still get when I execute xsane:

"no devices available".

However I do not get any errors when I execute as root, my scanner works and my regular user who executes xsane is member of the "scanner" and "lpt" group.

I just had this happen to me - I added myself to group "usb" and it started working...sort of.

xsane died as it started for me. Turns out it didn't like how xinerama (on) is set on my dual-head fglrx setup. It'd rather xrandr.

I ended up just running it in a VNC on my fglrx desktop. *shrug* haxx....

Adding myself to "usb" worked. Thanks.

i just recently plugged in my printer/scanner. ill document some on the official wiki if i have time.

mkultra@mksrv [ ~ ]$ groups
lp wheel audio games kvm users lpadmin plugdev samba vboxusers mkultra

i have absolutely no problem getting preview and scan going in xsane. my guess is lp lpadmin & plugdev have something to do with it.

I tried with just group plugdev, it didn't work for me (Xerox DocuMate 510, USB, avision driver). Putting 'usb' made it work again.

May depend on the scanner, the DocuMate is not an HP using hplip.

BTW, that wiki is ooolllld, I forgot when Gentoo used to use hotplug. Not needed anymore, most of my old machines I had to depclean it.
