I hope someone's willing to help me through this, it's been a while since I needed to touch the internals of my system, so I'm a bit rusty.

Emerge Output:
Code:
# emerge -avuDN --with-bdeps y --keep-going -p --backtrack=500 world
!!! Repository 'seden' is missing masters attribute in '/var/lib/layman/seden/metadata/layout.conf'

    /var/lib/layman/steam-overlay

  All profiles/repo_name entries must be unique in order to avoid having
  duplicates ignored. Set PORTAGE_REPO_DUPLICATE_WARN="0" in
  /etc/portage/make.conf if you would like to disable this warning.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "media-libs/libpng:0/0=".
(dependency required by "media-libs/lensfun-0.2.7" [installed])
(dependency required by "media-gfx/ufraw-0.19.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "media-gfx/imagemagick-6.8.8.10-r1[raw]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "app-emulation/playonlinux-4.1.9" [installed])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

HarfBuzz and ICU are things I've never heard of before, but it seems to be saying that a package is conflicting with itself.

Xorg-Server: I tried masking later versions from package.mask, and then emerge only found an earlier one (1.13.4-r1)
I tried all of the following:
Code:
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.4
>x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.3
>x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.3-r2

I looked up the "media-libs/libpng:0/0=" issue, and found someone saying to add that to package.mask (I've lost the thread now)
I checked and found libpng-1.6.12 is installed.

If it makes any difference, I'm running native steam, teamspeak3 and nvidia graphics drivers, and the mate desktop, everything else should be stock.

What have I messed up/what information do you need to know how I've messed up?

Illiander,

Fix this first.

Code:
!!! Repository 'seden' is missing masters attribute in '/var/lib/layman/seden/metadata/layout.conf'
!!! Set 'masters = gentoo' in this file for future compatibility
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.unmask: =>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.3-r2
WARNING: One or more repositories have been ignored due to duplicate
  profiles/repo_name entries:

  /, steam-overlay, /var/lib/layman/steam overrides
    /var/lib/layman/steam-overlay
    /var/lib/layman/steam
    /var/lib/layman/steam-overlay

  All profiles/repo_name entries must be unique in order to avoid having
  duplicates ignored. Set PORTAGE_REPO_DUPLICATE_WARN="0" in
  /etc/portage/make.conf if you would like to disable this warning.

Do not Set PORTAGE_REPO_DUPLICATE_WARN="0" as that only suppresses the message.

Pulled steam-overlay, as on trying to update it it looks like it isn't there any more anyway.

It asked for a bunch of keyword additions (a bunch more of steam needed ~amd64, so steam-overlay *was* causing problems)

I also added the unmask pile for Mate as it gets moved into portage (the news item showed up just as I was updating)

Something called for an etc-update, which mostly effected mate and steam needing some keyword changes, which I let through as they were.

Then I had to put back some of the steam keywords (just allowing amd64 for some bits of steam, I have got the x86 emulation layer stuff installed, but I had to unmask a few bits even though I'm on default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop, which I *think* is a multilib profile).

Other than that warning about repo names going away, the rest of the output is the same.
Code:
 # emerge -avuDN --with-bdeps y --keep-going -p --backtrack=500 world

And now I've gone and gotten my system into a right mess.

Terminal is locking up randomly, I'm using UXTerm because mate-terminal is failing.

I would *really* appreciate some help sorting out these issues so I can get my system back in a working and sane state.

Please?

Illiander,

Please post the content of /etc/portage/package* and /var/lib/portage/world.

This looks like some offthe pain of running a mixed arch and ~arch system.
Intermittent problems are usually hardware related.
Your profile is indeed a multilib profile. The no-multilib profiles all have no-multilib in their names.

OK :D

It seems that a *lot* of my issues were because I was still running from the mate overlay, having sorted that, the next issue that's popped up is this:
Code:
 * Could not find a usable .config in the kernel source directory.
 * Please ensure that /usr/src/linux points to a configured set of Linux sources.
 * If you are using KBUILD_OUTPUT, please set the environment var so that
 * it points to the necessary object directory so that it might find .config.
 * ERROR: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25::gentoo failed (setup phase):
 *   Kernel not configured; no .config found in /usr/src/linux
 *
 * Call stack:
 *                      ebuild.sh, line  93:  Called pkg_setup
 *   nvidia-drivers-337.25.ebuild, line 124:  Called linux-mod_pkg_setup
 *               linux-mod.eclass, line 570:  Called require_configured_kernel
 *              linux-info.eclass, line 297:  Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *              die "Kernel not configured; no .config found in ${KV_OUT_DIR}"
 *
 * If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25::gentoo'`,
 * the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25::gentoo'`.
 * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25/temp/die.env'.
 * Working directory: '/usr/lib64/portage/pym'
 * S: '/var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-337.25/work/

So now I get to upgrade my kernel, yay?

Illiander,

Well done.

Code:
* Could not find a usable .config in the kernel source directory.
means that your /usr/src/linux symlink points to a kernel that you have not installed yet. or even to no kernel at all.

Run uname -r to determine your running kernel, then point /usr/src/linux to the sources for that kernel. eselect kernel may help.
If you no longer have that kernel, post back.

>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.4 in both your package mask and package.unmask. That's probably a bad thing.

I wish I'd read this last night.

The kernel that I was using didn't have all the bits there (folder existed, but the makefile and some other bits weren't there anymore), and I couldn't figure out the emerge commend to force it back.

So I went and built a new kernel, using genkernel. I figured that wouldn't be too much effort, I broke grub's auto-boot last time I did that (I've had to manually type in the kernel, initfs and root dev at a grub console since then) so what could it hurt...

And now when it asks for the root dev the keyboard isn't working. And to make matters worse, when I boot the old kernel, mate isn't working either. (I'm typing this from my wife's computer, I've never gotten the hang of terminal web browsers) I would guess that the reason mate isn't working is because I rebuilt the graphics modules before rebooting, so that they'd work with the new kernel.

So, I guess I've got two options, I either get the keyboard working in the new kernel (where the only bits emerge is complaining about are to do with mate having file conflicts) or I figure out how to get my old kernel back in a working state (I'm pretty sure I'm just missing the syntax for emerging a specific version of gentoo-sources to do that).

Hopefully I'll have figured something out before you reply...

My old kernel was version 3.10.17, which emereg can't find anymore.

"emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.10.17" is resulting in Emerge not finding the ebuild.

Edit:

Ok, I'm an idiot on grub, I'd spelt kernel as kernek, I now have the new kernel booting without the initramfs needing to understand my keyboard, only issue is xdm gives me a pure black screen. Going to try building xterm and running startx to see if it's the drivers or the setup.

edit2: And I'm back on my own machine again, combination of nvidia-xconfig and emerging xterm.

Now to sort out the rest of this system update, so back to "emerge -vuDN --with-bdeps y -p --backtrack=500 world", and lets see what's needed.

I'm guessing that this is caused by the switch from mate-overlay to mate-portage, but I'll check the bits that aren't obvious.

And confirmed, the files there that aren't blatently part of mate, are from the earlier version of mate-control-center (They're from 1.6, emerge is trying to pull in 1.8 )

So, how do I tell emerge to ignore that? Just unmerge mate-control-center-1.6?

And the mess continues:

While emerging mate-extra/mate-power-manager-1.8.0-r1

I have gnome-keyring 3.10.1 installed, but it doesn't seem to come with gnome-keyring-1 anymore. Last version of gnome-keyring that included gnome-keyring-1 was 2.32.

I'm pretty sure this is a bug, either mate-power-manager needs to look for gnome-keyring, rather than gnome-keyring-1, or the gnome-keyring-3 ebuild needs to create gnome-keyring-1, like it used to.

fixing ebuilds is a little beyond my knowledge, so where do I start?

The pkg-config check for gnome-keyring-1 is actually a check for gnome-base/libgnome-keyring.

Thanks, that was the issue, old gnome3/mate masks were covering that, I'd fixed the gnome-keyring one, but not the libgnome-keyring one.

Does anyone know if MATE still needs the massive pile of gnome3 masks to keep systemd and gnome3 off the system?

And with that, for the first time in probably years, I have a consistant system.

Thank you to everyone, I'll mark this [SOLVED]
