1/ As I did, you almost certainly read the recent papers from the NASA ruining hopes for life on Mars BECAUSE :
Discovery had not found any : Methane!
2/ Flatulare ergo sum can now be consecrated as a trivial scientific evidence.
I no longer worry! If aliens invade us, we'll, at least, be able to share some common views.
3/ OK, now from a communication standpoint, what do you (well... I don't mean you ) do when you'd like to tell something but, you feel somehow embarrassed ?
You... find and tell some immediate consequence of that something.
And... Because you are embarrassed... you'll, almost certainly, commit yourself into some more or less disgraceful/charming lexical or grammatical fault.
4/ From above, I deduce [(C) aCOSwt 2103 all rights reserved] that when George Berkeley (Philosopher && Bishop && English => 3+ good reasons for being a bit... hmmm... uptight) writes his now more than famous "Esse is percipi" (I won't translate English in order not to insult the reader) (Note that to is intentionally omitted), he, as a matter of fact, thought "Esse est flatulare".
It's interesting to note how one can find deep profundities into the most trivial evidences when the true fact is abstracted to the full profit of one of its immediate consequences.

He said "I fart therefore I am." Apparently flatulence is an acceptable evidence of life (for planetary exploration)...
Well it has mixed person if I remember anything about Latin, took it about 35 years ago. |

Methane gas might serve as evidence of most forms of Earth-like animal life, but it's not even characteristic of all forms of Terrestrial life, much less of any and all forms of possible life in the universe. To think so is narrow-minded and terracentric.
flatulo ergo sum
Or maybe they think there some element like phlogiston, except it's called phlatuliston. _________________

Flatulo ergo sum.
People just don't get Latin anymore.
Edit: Just realized that BK already corrected it. Thank you. _________________ Kali Ma

I think it should be flatulo ergo sum .. I thought the French were good at latin verbs (flatulare=infinitive)
EDIT: Ok everybody noticed it ...
And French still declinate verbs in a way more close to the original latin than Italians. _________________ True ignorance is not the absence of knowledge, but the refusal to acquire it.

I never made any doubt that everybody is more capable in Latin than... in reading precisely what I write...

That statement was valid in particular for Berkeley... But... Why would I have made an exception for me? _________________

Clad in Sky wrote: | I like Harry Potter, but the Latin in it concerns me. :/ | I liked it too. I just assumed it was "inspired by Latin" rather than an attempt to be actual Latin. Poetic license and all that. I'm hoping the new book is good. _________________ The First of April. You got it all wrong.
No methane on Mars just shows how it became that scorched red planet.
The aliens produced so much methane that when it reached the critical mixture, due to an unfortunate spark the whole planet was engulfed in fire for a few hours, leaving only a scorched red dessert.
No seriously, scientists ought to stop jumping to such big conclusions just because they didn't find something in a few drills, with equipment that may not be even working reliably after all that time. Or maybe it's the press that tries to jump to such conclusions from a simple report, because they need a news story that doesn't show how terrible our real problems are as nobody wants to listen to that. The news is slowly becoming Sci-Fi, it just gets more views that way. |
