Trying to get Steam set up from overlay. Was giving me GLX extension not supported error, so I went to check out glxinfo, which gave me "Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig."

Not sure where to go from here. Using nvidia-drivers-381.22-r1, xorg-server-1.19.5-r1.

EDIT:

Switched to nouveau, not knowing what else to try. Now glxinfo/gears works, with an FPS of 2000+. 8O

Okay, I'll see if games run on nouveau...

EDIT^2:

Nouveau runs actual games, like DXMD, at about 5 FPS. But I think the problem with nvidia-drivers and not finding GLX is that the nvidia driver wasn't getting loaded due to a fb conflict.

The problem with
Quote:
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig."
mostly happens if you have forgotten to change the glx abi from xorg to nvidia

if you use nvidia driver you have to do a
Code:
eselect opengl set nvidia
if you don't, then you have this error

I get this error after doing this, which is what puzzles me.

I'm not sure if I understand you.
Do you mean you have done
Code:
eselect opengl set nvidia
and after that you have this error when you do a
Code:
glxinfo
?

Do you have at least blacklisted the nouveau drivers when you use the nvidia-drivers?

because you have either to do this or you have to remove the nouveau modules completely out of the kernel.

Yep, that's exactly what was happening. At this point I'm doing things a little differently, so I don't care as much about making this work any more, but it was puzzling. In all likelihood, it was a driver conflict of some kind that I didn't figure out. It just wasn't between nvidia and nouveau. It might make a difference that this is an Optimus laptop, but I'm not familiar with why it would matter.

No it's not a difference if its optimus or not, because you have at least to blacklist the nouveau driver. If you want have the ability to switch between nouveau and nvidia. If you only want to use the nvidia driver then you can/must remove the nouveau modules in your kernel configuration.

if you want be able to switch you have to add this

Code:
blacklist nouveau

to your
Code:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

then you should be able to switch your glx abi with
Code:
eselect opengl set nvidia
without the problems you have described

Im not really 100% sure about the optimus, but for switching your hybrid graphics you must add this feature in the kernel config graphics menu

Code:
[*] Laptop Hybrid Graphics - GPU switching support

Ah, cool, that last option I did not know about, so thank you. :)
