Decided to go with the manual configuration of the kernel( never done this before ). The first step in the handbook is to select the processor family, my processor is AMD Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core (x86). What processor family should I select?

I know the Processor is 64bit, but to start with I thought it was 32bit so I would like to carry on with the 32bit install as I have downloaded everything in x86. The installation cd is also (x86).

Could you also tell me where you find out the processor family.

Thank you for your time.

athlon K8 family in kernel,

-march=amdfam10 in the CFLAGS.

I don't know, which instruction sets are exactly enabled with amdfam10, so you should look up, which instruction sets your cpu (see corresponding microarchitecture wikipedia post) supports and then enable them in the cflags

I use
Quote:
CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe "
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

if you're not cross-compiling or using distcc that let's gcc figure out for you.
