i just tried to install gentoo on my thinkpad x61s, it has 4 gb ram and a 60 gb kingston ssd

done the usual partitioning: ~19 GB for /, rest for /home
mounted /tmp and /var/tmp/portage into tmpfs

after i extracted the stage tarball and chrooted into the new environment, i did an emerge --sync, and wanted to emerge the kernel sources, but it dies saying not enough space left on device

could this be because i mount both without specifying the size of the mount point?

also: should this configuration be enough at least to install a kernel and boot into the system itself to do the rest of the installation from there, or should i use a temporary file from an usb stick as mount point for portage?

Wait for one of the experts to confirm this but I think it's your /var/tmp/portage being a tmpfs. I may well be wrong, I'm new to Gentoo however on my first try I got further than you with an existing 5 gig / partition from my previous Debian installation and no tmpfs.

EDIT: my /usr/src/linux directory takes 664.6MB, so you could try specifying the size...

How big is your swap?
I wouldn't think you would need much with 4gb of ram but I ask because everything else you specified seems to check out.
What is strange is that 19GB should be more than enough space. I've installed Gentoo on a 2GB flash drive. The only space issue I had was running out of swap space when I compiled.
