PostPosted: Sat Aug 17, 2013 9:17 pm    Post subject: Xorg ignores monitor settings in xorg.conf after update Reply with quote

Some recent update has broken my Xorg so that it no longer uses my (old but good crt) monitor to its full capabilities and instead falls back on a very inferior default. Instead of 1600x1200 at 100 Hz I'm getting 1024x768 at 60 Hz (and eye strain).

Among other things, I tried downgrading xorg-server a notch, but it didn't fix the problem. Trying to cycle through the modes with ctr-alt-+ or ctr-alt-- doesn't have any effect.

The Xorg.0.log I posted was really all that there was, but here is a pastebin of the same anyway:

http://pastebin.com/QqizJwmC

Another thing that occurred to me is that the console seems to recognize my monitor's capabilities even though Xorg now doesn't. The console appears to be using 1024x768 (though I'm not sure where to check for the exact value) but I'm not experiencing that painful 60 Hz eyestrain.

Nerdanel,

The Intel driver does not understand these options.
Code:
[    31.383] (WW) intel(0): Option "PreferredMode" is not used
[    31.383] (WW) intel(0): Option "DefaultModes" is not used

I suspect your minitors EDID offers 1024x769@60Hz as the first EDID mode, so thats what the automatics use.

What does
Code:
man intel
tell?
You may need to write a modeline and use the emergency manual override to make the Intel driver use it.

As you have
Code:
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     24
                Modes "1600x1200" "1024x768" "800x600"
        EndSubSection
I suspect that the display does not have 1600x1200 in the EDID data at all.

PreferredMode and DefaultModes aren't Intel driver options at all. They're basic xorg.conf options that I have in the Monitor section of xorg.conf like they should be (according to man xorg.conf), and I don't understand why they're now being passed to the Intel driver.

I installed read-edid but didn't get any useful information.

Code:
# get-edid | parse-edid
get-edid: get-edid version 2.0.0

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f00 bx=0x0 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call successful

        VBE version 300
VBE string at 0x11100 "Intel(r)Broadwater-G Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS"

VBE/DDC service about to be called
        Report DDC capabilities

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x0 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call successful

Monitor and video card combination does not support DDC1 transfers
Monitor and video card combination does not support DDC2 transfers
0 seconds per 128 byte EDID block transfer
Screen is not blanked during DDC transfer

Reading next EDID block

VBE/DDC service about to be called
        Read EDID

        Performing real mode VBE call
        Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x1 cx=0x0
        Function supported
        Call failed

The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed
Error: output block unchanged
parse-edid: IO error reading EDID

The EDID thing shouldn't be such a problem though, as everything worked just fine two months ago.

Can you post a link to your dmesg?

BTW, one of my boxes with Intel graphics requires video=LVDS-1:d in kernel command line, otherwise it defaults to a wrong output (resulting in lowest resolution and inability to read EDID).

dmesg:

http://pastebin.com/6gUJWQ0m

I'm thinking maybe I should try downgrading xf86-video-intel even though according to genlop it has been in the 2.21 series since February.

I'm suspecting your kernel config, methinks it goes wrong in KMS level.
As I said, I have a box with Intel graphics, links to dmesg and Xorg log:

I haven't changed my kernel config lately. I'm still using the 3.1.5 kernel because it's been working fine. Anyway, I checked and in my .config I have:

CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y and
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y

Those were what you meant, right?

In your Xorg log I can see:
Code:
[    24.586] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor "VSC", prod id 2842
[    24.587] (II) intel(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync
[    24.587] (II) intel(0): Using EDID range info for vertical refresh

That might be relevant since I wasn't able to read my EDID. Perhaps it's because I have an old monitor.

Not sure, but there may be something interfering with KMS in your kernel. Anyhow, my Intel box was working fine, too, until some upgrade (do not remember which one) forced me to disable digital output of Intel chipset - and it is even not physically present on this motherboard! This is what I needed video=LVDS-1:d for. Mitä perkele? :) I have friends in Karjalohja ...

Oh, the old standby of teaching foreigners how to swear... :)

Anyway, my console is just fine like how it used to be so I don't think this is a kernel issue. At the moment the console is graphically superior to the graphical user environment, which just feels wrong...

I discovered that I apparently do have the modes found too, they just aren't being used properly.

Code:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1600x1200      85.0 +   75.0     70.0     65.0     60.0
   2048x1536      75.0     60.0
   1920x1440      85.0     75.0     60.0
   1856x1392      75.0     60.0
   1792x1344      75.0     60.0
   1400x1050      74.8     60.0
   1280x1024      85.0     75.0     60.0
   1280x960       85.0     60.0
   1152x864       75.0
   1024x768       85.0     75.0     70.1     60.0*
   1024x768i      87.1
   832x624        74.6
   800x600        85.1     72.2     75.0     60.3     56.2
   848x480        60.0
   640x480        85.0     72.8     75.0     59.9     59.9
   720x400        85.0
   640x400        85.1
   640x350        85.1

Now, what to do with that information...

Edit:
Code:
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto
fixes the issue. I still don't consider the matter solved properly though, as I shouldn't be writing that thing in the virtual terminal every time I log into the GUI. This is just a stopgap solution.
