agszepp,

Welcome to Gentoo

Code:
[   927.336] (EE) No devices detected.
usually means some other driver has grabbed your graphics chip, before the Xorg driver got to it. Its usually caused by a hardware framebuffer option in the kernel being on when it needs to be off.

Make friends with wgetpaste and put your kernet .config file onto a pastebin site.
Tell us the link you get back

My paste is here: http://bpaste.net/show/174328. I forgot to mention that I used genkernel.

agszepp,

genkernel, unaided cannot build you a suitable kernel.
The problem is that some kernel settings conflict with other kernel settings.

You must use genkernel with the -menuconfig option, so you can help it out.

Pay attention to the Configuring framebuffers & the Intel Section
Your kernel setup is not correct.

Rebuild your kernel following the Wiki.

Hint: The kernel has several thousand configuration options arranged in a tree. You can search for options by pressing /
The options
Code:
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_FB_EFI=y
must be off. So practice on them. They are not the complete answer, there are other options which must be on.

What do you mean by that? I searched for those options on my pastebin and they were set to
Code:

CONFIG_FB_VESA=y

agszepp,

Thats a part of your problem.

Code:
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
means the option is on, built into the kernel.
Code:
CONFIG_FB_VESA=m
means that the option is a loadable module.
Code:
# CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set
means that the option is off.

Both of the options listed in my earlier post must be off.
The Wiki says
Code:
Kernel configuration Configuring framebuffers

Device Drivers --->
  Graphics support --->
    Support for frame buffer devices --->
    ## (Disable all drivers, including VGA, Intel, nVidia, and ATI)

    ## (Further down, enable basic console support. KMS uses this.)
    Console display driver support --->
      <*>  Framebuffer Console Support

You also need the settings under Intel settings, on the same page.

Never use a text editor to edit the kernel .config file directly. Horrible things usually happen, thats why is says
Code:
#
# Automatically generated file; DO NOT EDIT.
at the top of the file.

Actually, CONFIG_FB_EFI=y is one of very few values that are OK.

Thanks for all your help NeddySeagoon. I recompiled the kernel and I got KDE running, but there's no volume icon. What should I do about that?

agszepp,

Start a new thread for a new problem. I'm not a KDE user, so can't help.
A new thread will show up in the 'Unanswered Posts' search, so you will get help sooner.
