It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- sys-kernel/module-rebuild-0.5::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> (28 Dec 2013)
# Replaced by 'emerge @module-rebuild' set in Portage itself.
# Removal in 30 days, see http://bugs.gentoo.org/410739

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Try without libreoffice-bin
or keep going absolutely stable

Unfortunately, emerging without libreoffice-bin did not seem to help. I unmerged libreoffice-bin, and emerged libreoffice. Still being hit by the same conflicts.

i have many slot conflicts too - perhaps we have the same root cause? has there been some change in how slots work in the last few months?

I tried the instructions at http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Troubleshooting (search for slot conflict), specifically to manually emerge the highest version, but that doesn't seem to work either:

Code:

# emerge -1avq =app-text/poppler-0.24.5::gentoo
[ebuild     U ] app-text/poppler-0.24.5 [0.22.5] USE="cairo curl cxx introspection jpeg lcms png qt4 tiff utils -cjk -debug -doc -jpeg2k"

it doesn't even look like a "slot conflict"; it looks like we just want an update - unless relatively small updates are considered new slots?

next i tried listing the packages depending on 0.22.5, e.g. =app-office/texmaker-4.0.2::gentoo. those packages don't exist anymore, so i had to list them as e.g. app-office/texmaker. so that's annoying, but it seems to get a little farther. now a half dozen dependencies with similar slot issues pop up:

Code:

emerge -1avq =app-text/poppler-0.24.5::gentoo app-office/texmaker net-print/cups-filters mail-client/claws-mail dev-tex/luatex app-text/evince

...

note that poppler is no longer complaining about the packages depending on it (at least not the ones i am building with on the command line; now i can see one of the remaining two). but some of these slot dependencies are ridiculous, such as this one:

Code:

sys-libs/zlib:0

  (sys-libs/zlib-1.2.8-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.8-r1:=[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,abi_mips_o32(-)?] required by (media-libs/libpng-1.6.8::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

  (sys-libs/zlib-1.2.8::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

an -r1 is a new slot?

Code:

virtual/libffi:0

  (virtual/libffi-3.0.11::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

  (virtual/libffi-3.0.11::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    virtual/libffi[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,abi_mips_o32(-)?] required by (dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

and this one: it looks like the same package.

anyway, is there some big config change that i missed? or are these really separate slots that need manual attention? i hadn't emerged in a few months. here's my info:

Code:

Try without libreoffice-bin
or keep going absolutely stable

Unfortunately, emerging without libreoffice-bin did not seem to help. I unmerged libreoffice-bin, and emerged libreoffice. Still being hit by the same conflicts.

Re-emerging libreoffice again should be your last task!!!

Firstly emerge things which you cannot remove
emerge -c -p SOME

means:
Upgrade ebuilds other packages depend on!
What is dependend on libreoffice? Nothing.

@slowdive
you have a lot of ebuilds active on your system which do not exist in official portage tree any more.
What happens if:
emerge --sync
/usr/sbin/perl-cleaner all
emerge portage
emerge -auvDN @system

Then write down a list of old not existing packages you can safely
emerge -c libreoffice
etc ... then try again .... next cycle .....
And last but not least
emerge -c
emerge -auvDN @world

@slowdive,
alternatively, if you know you don't upgrade very often your system, you should try to change to the stable release of Gentoo.

Thanks for the response.

It's a little unclear to me why certain packages need to be uninstalled. For instance, when trying to update libpng, which is one of the slot offenders:

Code:
# emerge -1qav =media-libs/libpng-1.6.8::gentoo
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/zlib-1.2.8-r1 [1.2.8] USE="minizip -static-libs" ABI_X86="(64%*) -32% (-x32)"
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/libpng-1.6.8 [1.5.15] USE="apng (-neon) -static-libs" ABI_X86="(64%*) -32% (-x32)"

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

media-libs/libpng:0

  (media-libs/libpng-1.5.15::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (app-emulation/wine-1.7.0::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (kde-base/kdelibs-4.10.5::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (app-text/ghostscript-gpl-9.07::gentoo, installed)
    >=media-libs/libpng-1.4:0/0= required by (x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (media-video/cinelerra-20120707::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (net-print/cups-filters-1.0.35::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (x11-libs/cairo-1.12.14-r2::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (media-gfx/gthumb-3.0.2::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (app-text/poppler-0.22.5::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (media-video/dvdauthor-0.7.1::gentoo, installed)
    media-libs/libpng:0/0= required by (media-video/mjpegtools-2.0.1_rc1-r1::gentoo, installed)
    (and 1 more with the same problems)

  (media-libs/libpng-1.6.8::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    =media-libs/libpng-1.6.8::gentoo

Should I uninstall every one of those packages (wine, kdelibs, etc?). If the new libpng has an API change, wouldn't revdep-rebuild catch them? It just seems odd that 1.6.8 doesn't satisfy the dependency of all those packages, resulting in the slot conflict.

Is there something to the :0/0 vs the ::gentoo that I'm missing?

Here's the full output of @system:

From scanning the forums for complaints about slots and libpng, it looks like other people have similar problems:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-981228.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-981158.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-981120.html

for two of my more offensive slot conflicts (libpng and poppler), i managed to emerge them with the --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y flag (which was mentioned in those other posts, and is meant for debugging).

that allowed me to update the package "manually", by ignoring any slot complaints. with those two (and a manual update of sys-apps/sysvinit), i'm able to get a full build plan for @system. Once that's done, i'll try a similar approach with @world: if any package complains about slot conflicts, use the --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y flag, and report if it worked out or not.

anyway, based on the recent threads of people with similar problems and the requirement to use debugging flags, maybe this is a more widespread problem? either in portage or in people's understanding of slots (i'm not 100% sure about the notation/lingo/usage of slots).

After an emerge -u @system, i tried @world. ran into issues with emul-linux packages that are unresolvable even with the magic --ignore flag.

Try to emerge -Cp all this app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-* packages. It was the thing that helped me earlier. I have a lot of slot conflicts too while upgrading. And portage became an awful shit with its 2.0 version. It takes several minutes to do "emerge -1uDNp @system" or "emerge -1uDNp @world" and this is completely unbearable. I wanna destroy those who introduced all that crap with 2.0 portage!

That's what "emerge -1uDN @system" gives me:
Code:
Total: 71 packages (52 upgrades, 1 downgrade, 5 new, 1 in new slot, 12 reinstalls, 1 uninstall), Size of downloads: 225,473 kB

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by gnome-base/gconf-2.32.4-r1
# required by media-plugins/gst-plugins-gconf-0.10.31
# required by net-im/pidgin-2.10.7-r4[gstreamer]
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
=sys-apps/dbus-1.6.18-r1 ~amd64

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- dev-dotnet/gtk-sharp-2.12.21-r1::dotnet (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Tom Wijsman <TomWij@gentoo.org> (09 Jan 2014)
# Monolithic dev-dotnet/{gnome,gtk}-sharp introduction mask, see bug #382491.

- dev-dotnet/gtk-sharp-2.99.1::dotnet (masked by: package.mask)
- kde-base/solid-4.10.5::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Johannes Huber <johu@gentoo.org> (14 Dec 2013)
# Masked for removal in 30 days. Not packaged in current
# stable KDE SC 4.11 and later.

- dev-dotnet/gnome-sharp-2.24.2-r1::dotnet (masked by: package.mask)
- sys-kernel/module-rebuild-0.5::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> (28 Dec 2013)
# Replaced by 'emerge @module-rebuild' set in Portage itself.
# Removal in 30 days, see http://bugs.gentoo.org/410739

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

thanks for the advice - i'll try that out when i get to it. i've been plugging along, using the --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y flag when things fail to install (anything with a slot conflict). when that fails, i install it with --nodeps. at that point, i (think i) know what i want to install, so i just force it.

with the occasional --nodeps, i got to the point that emerge -uDavq @system gave me a list of things to build without conflict. we'll see how that goes.

yeah, that's pretty rough. mine is really slow too. i noticed it's single core, so i have a couple tabs that i run different emerges in at the same time to get some parallelism. but still - it is much slower than in the old days (presumably it needs to figure out all these slot conflicts for us to solve!).

i have a couple other gentoo machines that need updating. i think i might just skip updating those - i don't have time to go through and manually install every library, especially on slower hardware. if it's going to be as painful as a reinstall, i don't see it getting any harder.

I ended up not needing to uninstall the emul-* packages. Using --nodeps on specific libraries worked out as a method of last resort.

For libpng, eventually I had packages that insisted on the old 1.5, so I forced the installation of the 1.5 slot:

Code:
emerge -1avq libpng:0 libpng:1.5

I don't know exactly how the separate slots work, but I did notice the ebuild for libpng-1.5.17-r15 has SLOT="1.5", so it looks like this version was kept around to resolve some of these issues.

Other than that, I'm mostly through a -uDavN world with no issues. (And one of my other machines didn't need many --nodeps either).

My proposal to forcefully purge ebuilds is meant as a workaround to get a cleaned up and small portage feedback which you can handle :)

If such packages would have to rebuild or upgraded it is just the same compile work when purging at first :)

Most packages are small and do fastly recompile :)

but the big ones (firefox , chromium etc) do need recompilations anyway
when there was upgraded boost, icu, sqlite .... :(

For me adding "--backtrack=30" to the emerge command solved the issue:

Code:
emerge -uDNav --backtrack=30 world
