[SOLVED]no password prompt on login

I do not get a 'password:' prompt after entering the username on console login. For obvious reasons I can not look into the logs of the running machine and unfortunately there are no logs in the filesystem as it is a remoteboot system where all write operations go to a tmpfs.
Does anyone know any reasons why agetty should not start login after entering an account name?

EDIT: It is a newly set up system. So it didn't work from the beginning

It had been a misconfiguration of bootmisc which is only a problem in my setup. I'm fine now. Thank you for looking
