error: file "/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" not found

I've used SystemRescueCD 3.4.2 to partition my single hd, a 750 gb ssd. Partitions are:

/dev/sda1 ext3 boot 80mb
/dev/sda2 swap swap 1 gb
/dev/sda3 ext4 root 697 gb

When I attempt to run a stage3 disk, this is the output I get:

GRUB loading.
Welcome to GRUB!

Error: file "/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" not found
Entering rescue mode...
Grub rescue>

When I try "find /boot" I get unknown command "find"; or cd /boot, I get unknown command "cd".

I know there must be a simple solution to this, but I'm tired of searching for it. Help needed.

what you have done and what you want to do is not clear to me. I'm guessing that you installed gentoo as described in the gentoo handbook using sysresccd as the install media and attempted your first boot with the described results? Also that you chose grub2 as bootloader?

The reference to /grub/i386-pc/normal.mod suggests things got badly confused

Thanks for your reply Donahue. Let me try to clear this up. I only used the Rescuecd to partition my hd. After the partitioning was completed, I exited the System and removed the rescuecd from the cdrom drive. I then placed a recent Stage3-amd64 in the cdrom drive and attempted to boot it. It was at this point that the Grub loading message appeared. Grub was installed by the rescuecd, not by any selection on my part.

I just placed a licensed copy of windoze 7 in the cdrom drive and it booted without a problem.

I have no os installed at this time, just the aforementioned partitions.
Perhaps the stage3-amd64-080113 isn't bootable?
I guess I'll have to look into installing gentoo from the rescuecd.

What a PITA this is becoming!

System rescue cd is gentoo based, you can do a full install using it. Just put the cd in boot system rescue mount the partitions and cd into gentoo "cd /mnt/gentoo" download the tarball using elinks and use tar to extract. From there follow the handbook

Stage3-amd64 is not bootable it is a prepackaged basic gentoo file system

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?style=printable&full=1 is the 64 bit system install procedure. if you wish to install a different archetecture there are other handbooks for other arch's.
Gentoo is a distro for building a distro.
