Hi,

Just curious if there's a way to set the keyboard layout ONLY for remote logins? Or only for the local login, for that matter.

I've got multiple boxes. Some of them I log into on the console sometimes and from the network others. I don't use the standard US layout, and since my workstation is using that layout AND the remote box is using that layout, everything gets garbled. It's like they both do the transformation assuming an en_US layout, and I get something useless.

So I'm curious if I can set a .xmodmap_local and then also have a .xmodmap_net or something.

For VMs that I never use the console on, I just leave the whole thing as US mapping and the workstation's map works fine.

IMO xmodmap should only be applied at the beginning, when the keyboard buffer is being read by the operating system it's attached to physically. After that it should be characters passing around, each one with a modifier map associated with it if necessary.
