I just finished installing my first Gentoo system following the handbook and choosing Desktop configuration (X).
I got everything fine to the point of working in text. Then installed various x11 or Xorg related packages, and at some point
I made possible to run 'startx' and actually see graphics and firefox under twm.

My last need is to install the ATI/AMD card driver, which is a new Radeon HD 7850 and I have failed.
I have chosen to install the closed-source driver, because I certainly need OpenCL and generally all of the cards features.

This card and driver work really well for me in XUbuntu with the closed-source fglrx driver
(one strange thing I notice is that in latest Ubuntu aticonfig has been renamed to amdconfig, however I see aticonfig in Gentoo).

So, after running:

emerge ati-driver

aticonfig --initial

I never managed to see graphics again in Gentoo.

I can see the new module fglrx with lsmod, and things looks as if there is a driver bug:

Upon X or Xorg, I see a black screen (screen led goes off for a short while like when trying to change resolution) and then blackness. Trying to Alt-Ctrl-F1 myself back to text mode shows nothing like the screen is dead, although, Alt-Ctrl-F7 after Alt-Ctrl-F1 does make the screen led go off again! And the PC is not locked as I can reboot via Alt-Ctrl-F1 and Alt-Ctrl-Del.

At some point the PC was locked too, at some of my experimentations. I tried both:

eselect opengl set ati

eselect opengl set xorg-x11

I have also tried at some point

Xorg -configure

Nothing seems to work after the fglrx module installation. At some XOrg configurations I also got full PC locks when I run Xorg (reset button needed).

So my question is, has anyone installed a new Radeon driver with a 78xx card sucessfully in Gentoo?
I am obviously new with Gentoo, so I have difficulty finding the correct packages in emerge etc. and I could be missing something important.

Help will be greatly appreciated,[/code]
