Pidgin shows LDAP info instead of username

I'm using pidgin 2.10.7-r1 with sametime protocol(compiled with meanwhile). However, it is not handleing the ldap information correctly. For instance, I can't IM anyone at my work...they all appear offline. and when someone IM's me instead of their username showing, I get all their ldap info. So instead, of username showing it shows CN=bob332,OU=SAT,OU=ACCOUNTS,DC=foo.com.

I am running pidgin in debug mode and don't see any errors.

How can I fix this?
