I'm totally a noob on gentoo. I have been searching but i'm not completly sure of what I'm doing. I want to install gnome 3.6 which is currently on testing. Does sombody know some guide to install it? I don't find any documentation and I get a little lost while trying to solve dependencies.

The web page en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Gnome_3 seems to explain how to install it, but en.gentoo-wiki.com has been down for days. Does anyone know what can happen to it?

Add ~ to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in /etc/portage/make.conf if you feel you don't mind running not stabilized versions.

But if you do mind to run stable versions, and solely want Gnome 3.6 you might want to accept only the keywords for those packages; like so:
Quote:
# Backs up file.
mv /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords{,.bak}

# Creates directory.
mkdir /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/

# Move file to directory.
mv /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords.bak /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/accept_keywords

# Create Gnome 3.6 unmask file.
awk -vRS= '/Gnome 3.8 Mask/' /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask | sed 's/^>=/</' > /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/Gnome3.6
Whenever you sync, you can run this last line again.

You'll probably note the 3.8 mask, this awk and sed magic rewrites that such that it accepts all versions that are not Gnome 3.8 or higher; effectively accepting keywords on Gnome 3.6.

PS: Yes, there is a intentional space after -vRS=.

Instead of working with the entire unstable branch I would prefer to just use gnome of the unstable branch. So I added the metapackage "gnome-base/gnome" on /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords. Is this ok instead of adding ~ on the entire architecture?

Doing what you suggested, I'm still getting dependecy conflicts. To be precise, this is my standard error output when running "emerge gnome"

Code:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

You'll need to remove any Gnome package you installed prior to this first, otherwise it will try to get Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 to be simultaneously on your system; that causes some unnecessary conflicts.

After doing it again, you need to add all the packages listed at the bottom of your output to /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/accept_keywords (those with ~amd64) and /etc/portage/package.use (those with USE flags). After which you can emerge again.

If you don't want to manually copy them, you can add --autounmask-write to the end of the emerge command; then after it gives that output again, you can run `dispatch-conf` or `etc-update` which will help you update the config for you.

Mixing stable and ~ is a tricky thing to do, the dependency tree of Gnome pulls in a lot of packages into ~ and might conflict against some stable versions, and as far as I know nobody is maintaining a list of which packages to accept keywords for anymore; if you have too much problems with this, consider to go for the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS approach instead. If you do so, make sure to undo the above changes you did. A lot of people run this without much problems; I run ~ for a year, you're 30 days less stable but you're still on the same level of what upstream considers as stable. Problems are dealt with or masked, experimental code is not keyworded with anything; so, while it is 30 days less stable, it's not that you can't run it at all.

Agreed though, this shouldn't be necessary; I hope we can see stabilization of Gnome 3.* in the future. Maybe, as a Gnome user myself; I'll try to help them out in the near future, they seem undermanned.

The output above what you pasted does; always consider the full output, and not a part of it. The slot conflicts are not necessarily a problem.

On a side note, if you pass --tree --unordered-display to emerge you get a neat indented overview tree to see which packages depend on which ones.

I'm on a fresh install of gentoo, so I don't have any desktop environment (sorry for the lack of information). Therefore, for solving the problem:

Code:

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

What shoud I do? I should do something or just go ahead?

I understand now how to solve the USE and KEYWORD problems using --autounmask-write. Thank you!

I would try to use the unstable branch then. Thank you!

Just go ahead and emerge; only if you are stuck, then feel free to paste the full emerge output. If the same thing is listed as a slot conflict for a very long time, as in more than two weeks; you might want to file a bug about the slot conflict, but usually those resolve themselves as versions get bumped or slot corrections get made...

I finally installed gnome 3.6 using --backtrack=30. Without it, I couldn't emerge it due to slots conflict. It started normally, but one time each a couple of hours it breaks with a kernel panic message. So finally, I unmerged it, and installed gnome 2. Now gnome 2 seems stable.

Thank you anyway for all your help TomWij!
