I just found out gimp supports single-window mode which is great for tiling wm. Just select "window -> single-window mode".

That's with gimp 2.8, right?
For gimp 2.6, XMonad has a good IM layout modifier and i3 can move the windows around to achieve something similar. |

Correct, although having a single window mode has been available since 2.7 and as early as somewhere in 2010 iirc.
There was also (quite a few years ago) a fairly common 'hack' where you launched gimp inside its on gtk window, so you had one window with the separate gimp windows inside of it.
// Edit:
I think this may have been something like it: http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/09/05/howto-run-gimp-in-one-window/ |

I couldn't find a stabilization bug for gimp-2.8, does anyone know what the current status is? |

I wouldn't really call this a tip worthy of Documentation Tips & tricks though. This is a documented and announced feature of gimp 2.8 (which is very nice I might add) _________________
