So, upgraded the system, rebuild kernel, got just about everything working, even got the radeon card working first time around, once I figured out that the reason the system seems to crash is that X does not map, recognise or find the keyboard, mouse and potentially the buttons on the front of my case.

Have now been struggling with this for quite a while, and the problem is that I can't find where there is a problem, even thinking that maybe it is gentoo that have decided that I have no use for keyboard and mouse.
That is just not me bitching, it is the fact that the system seems to do all it things it should, and see no problem, as far as I can tell, by the fact that I have no mouse or keyboard in X.

I am using Logitech Cordless Desktop® LX 700, old but still working (well not in X right now, but in the terminal it worked fine, and prior to upgrade it worked fine.

So I checked the udev (/dev/input, guessing that is udevs work). And has definitely found the mouse, and a keyboard, or well, at least the controller to the keyboard.
Code:
ls -1 /dev/input
ls -1 /dev/input
event0
event1
event2
event3
mice
mouse0

And looking at these devices
Code:

  for i in `ls -1 /dev/input`; do  echo "*****************************************************************************************" ;echo "Device /dev/input/$i";udevadm info -a -n /dev/input/$i | head -20 ; done

From make.conf
Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"

So OK, udev has a mouse even if it does not recognise the keyboard.
I have re emergeed evdev, udev (virtual), neither seems to do any difference.
In the very end there is a log from X, and as far as I can tell, it does not even try to map any keyboard or mouse, neither does it load evdev as a module.
Any suggestions?

'-a' might be useful when you're writing the rule, but for the time being, more interesting is the output on event* nodes without it.

Was udev built with USE="keymap"?

Unless upstream has recently changed something, 'keymap' refers only to things like forced release quirks, not such general things like builin input_id.

So added key maps and rebuilt udev and it did add a package, systemd.

Code:

 * Messages for package sys-apps/systemd-201:

 *   CONFIG_FANOTIFY:    is not set when it should be.
 * Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
 * Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems.

 * Messages for package sys-apps/systemd-201:

 * One or more symlinks to directories have been preserved in order to
 * ensure that files installed via these symlinks remain accessible. This
 * indicates that the mentioned symlink(s) may be obsolete remnants of an
 * old install, and it may be appropriate to replace a given symlink with
 * the directory that it points to.
 *
 *    /usr/share/gtk-doc/html/libudev
 *

 * Messages for package sys-apps/systemd-201:

 * Upstream suggests that the /etc/mtab file should be a symlink to /proc/mounts.
 * It is known to cause users being unable to unmount user mounts. If you don't
 * require that specific feature, please call:
 *    $ ln -sf '/proc/self/mounts' '/etc/mtab'
 *
 * To get additional features, a number of optional runtime dependencies may
 * be installed:
 *   [ ] sys-apps/systemd-ui (for GTK+ systemadm UI and gnome-ask-password-agent)
>>> Auto-cleaning packages...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: media-libs/mesa-9.1.2-r1
 *  - /usr/lib64/libxatracker.so.1
 *  - /usr/lib64/libxatracker.so.1.0.0
 *      used by /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.so (x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware-12.0.2-r1)

No luck.

Also VoidMage, added the full output

Do you have

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"

in make.conf?

Is x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev installed?

v_andal: checked, and have reemerged it a couple of times.

OK, for some reason, your input devices aren't getting tagged properly.

What does 'udevadm test-builtin input_id' print on syspaths ("P:" values from 'udevadm info') of those event nodes ?

If you really need to to in as a script, `udevadm info -q path $i` as the argument of 'udevadm test-builtin input_id'.

After glancing at this thread, it occurs to me to ask if you have tried emerge -1v $(qlist -IC x11-drivers/*)? This usually solves this type of problem after an xorg update.

@The Doctor: if the device nodes aren't tagged correctly by udev, input hotplug can't work - toying with the input driver won't change that.

The Doctor: Tried emerging the driver again, and still no luck what so ever.

VoidMage: Don't have to use it in a script, just lazy, so did it that way rather than running it 3 times in a row.

Pretty certain that it is event3 that is the keyboard, and event2 is the usb receiver for mouse and keyboard. Not certain though.

I am also slowly running out of things to try, so anyone have any ideas.
Is there any kernel settings that may be causing this (well, any one could I guess, in theory) anyone who have specific ideas of kernel settings that could cause this issue?

OK, so found that you can reload using uvdevadm, so tried all usb commands (and yes, wrote a script to save myself some time)

Seems like event2 is the keyboard and event3 is the mouse, at least the ID string indicates that (do not know much about udev.
Does anyone know if I am suppose to have a /dev/input/kbd or similar device, or does this indicate that udev works but X is missing it?

The following script will reload any input devices it things is connected via usb (and make the output forum friendly)
Code:

UDEV_PATH="udevadm info -q path "
UDEVLOADTES="udevadm test --action=add "

for i in `ls -1 /dev/input/event*`
do

        echo "Input Event: $i"
        echo "[code]"
        x=`$UDEV_PATH $i`
        echo "PATH $x"
        echo "$x" | grep usb >> /dev/null 2>&1
        if [[ $? -eq 0 ]]
        then
                echo "Device is USB, will test reload"
                $UDEVLOADTES $x
        fi
        echo "[/code]"
done

Input Event: /dev/input/event0
Code:

PATH /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0C:00/input/input0/event0

Input Event: /dev/input/event1
Code:

PATH /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXPWRBN:00/input/input1/event1

Code:

'udevadm test-builtin' output looks about right (the missing ID_* vars are added), so it does seem it's something about your kernel settings.

So, for a start CONFIG_DEVTMPFS and CONFIG_TMPFS_POSIX_ACL come to mind.

I'm doing an upgrade after a long period of dormancy and have run into the same issue. I have the mouse and kbd in the regular terminal (using gpm) but as soon as I start X (gdm) there is no mouse or kbd.

Does anyone know if there is a way to start evdev in some debug mode or similar?

To me it still seems like the driver never tries to load the keyboard or mouse or so it looks like in Xorg.log.

:roll: Server never tries to load evdev driver exactly because the devices aren't marked by udev properly.

Now, why does that happen is yet to be figured out.

Got it to work. I basically rebuilt deleted my .config and rebuilt the kernel. then I removed all of the rules in /etc/udev/rules.d and did a emerge -e x11-base/xorg

Sorry I cannot pin down the details better, but that is what I did. I now have the mouse and keyboard in X.

Mr New User:
Your comment may have helped me move things toward a solution, kind of, or well, it seems somewhat fixed, I just have no clue why...

So, noticed that I had absolutely no rules in /etc/udev/rules.d, so thought they possibly had been missed.
so I ran emerge --unmerge udev, then tried to reemerge udev and realised that I am running virtual/udev rather than sys.../udev. The sys version is blocked by systemd.
Turned on debuging (change udev_log in /etc/udev/udev.conf to debug), restarted and tried, all is fine.
Rebooted and tried again, broken.
Then came the realisation, I had in all my haste logged in as another user to try if it has worked. And it seems like my main user can log into X and get keyboard and mouse no problem, but as soon as I do it as root it fails.
What is even more bizarre is, if I log in as vrghost, startx then stop x, log out and log in as root and redo it, I have keyboard and mouse for root...

Any suggestions, anyone know if there are any evdev cash files or anything that is user specific?

So. It seems like it is specific to root, not certain why, but there may be a work around for now. Create a new user and log in as that user and start X. Sadly enough I can't tell you why this works, still looks like root just don't want to try to load keyboard and mouse. Have attached the two xorg logs if someone has any ideas.

Log starting it as vrghost (working)
