|
|
I would like to be able to mount my cddrom drive when I insert my cd and unmount when I hit the eject button. I know it is possible to do this but I have no idea how. Can someone fill me in? |

You're looking for autofs and automount. There's Mandrake's Supermount, which should be better, but I don't know... _________________ Tactless

Supermount is included in the ck kernel patches and has worked quite well for me. More info about supermount can be obtained here: http://supermount-ng.sourceforge.net (This, of course, raises the question of whether or not you want to recompile the kernel with whatever risks that entails just for supermount.) The ck kernel sources are available from the gentoo package database. Instructions for set-up once installed are available here: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=16857&group_id=79609 . In addition to using it for CDs, I added a line to /etc/fstab to accommodate my USB mass storage camera, which makes using it very convenient. One note of caution: slocate (updatedb) wouldn't work after I installed supermount. This was fixed by adding "supermount" to the list of excluded filesystems in the line PRUNEFS in /etc/updatedb.conf.
Hope this was useful information. |

What exactly is the ck kernel and how does it differ from the regular gentoo kernel? |

It's a set of patches applied to the latest plain vanilla kernel with the aim of improving desktop performance. If I'm not mistaken, some of the main features will appear in kernel 2.6. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-kernel.xml for further explanation and a link to the maintainer's website with detailed info. It's also possible to download at his site just the supermount patch. I have a lot of use for the supermount feature - on the other hand, I don't notice a lot of difference in performance to the gentoo kernel I first used; maybe someone doing high-powered computing would. By the way, this is all FYI -- as a relative newcomer to Gentoo, I had to deal with some consequences of changing kernels that I didn't know about before. So, the only advice I feel competent to give is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". |

You don't need that ! It's also in the gentoo-sources... _________________ There are 10 sorts of people on this world.

Great. That'll be easier. I'll add it to my fstab and see if it's already compiled into mine. |

Hm, works, but is there a posibility to have my CD-drive mounted ONLY if a CD is inside, so that nautilus just shows the CD-icon only if a disc is inserted? _________________ Daniel Haus
