vlc-2.x.x sound distorted

Hi,
I can't get the new vlc 2.x.x to work correctly. Every change in vlc's volume results in distorted very loud noise with a little of the original sound in the background. I think any setting besides 100% leads to maximum volume distorting the output.
I tested vlc-2.1.0, 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.

Anybody any ideas ?
