I heard about the new font rendering engine Adobe donated to the freetype project. I wanted to test it out, but rebuilding freetype with adobe-cff use flag doesn't appear to change anything. I compared screenshots of chromium and the fonts look identical. Am I missing something here?

I am dumb when it comes to font configuration, but I know that eselect has modules to configure fontconfig, infinality and lcdfilter. One or many of those might be relevant here, you might need to enable something in there for the thing to show up, dunno

I looked through all of them, there's nothing that might be of interest here.

Same result here. :-(

You can see a difference if you start
Code:
ftview 12 <font file>

and toggle the font engine using 'H' (upper case). In order to get ftview compiled and installed, you must emerge freetype with 'utils' USE flag.

Please note that the new font engine works only with CFF fonts - you won't see a difference for TrueType fonts.

Ah, that's the bit I've been missing. I've never heard of "CFF fonts" and thought it's an improvement for all font rendering. Thanks.
