|
|
Though I had had issues with it in the past, I had for the most part a working Flash Player plugin for Firefox--that is, until the last Firefox update. Now, my Flash plugin seems to have spontaneously broken and nothing I've tried so far can revive it. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin multiple times, updating it, uninstalling and reinstalling said updated plugin multiple times, tricking Firefox into thinking Chrome's PepperFlash is the right plugin, and making a new symbolic link as per this thread, but all to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this issue that I haven't tried yet?

Sorry about that.
Current Firefox version: 21.0 (most recent update)
Current Flash Player version: 11.2.202.285
emerge --info with Flash Player settings: http://bpaste.net/show/104485 |

In firefox's about:config, set plugins.load_appdir_plugins to true.
Or use browser/plugins as the path instead of just plugins.
Here's the bug, an amusing moan, and more info. |

@PaulBredbury: I already redid the path, but changing plugins.load_appdir_plugins in about:config worked! Thank you so much!!!
@Jaglover: Please forgive me for asking what may well be an extremely stupid/obvious question, but what exactly would that entail? |

Well, while it is not absolute truth (what is?), Gentoo packages are tested against each other to make sure they work. It is absolutely impossible to test how all possible software combinations work. Thus it is paramount to have your system up-to-date with chosen arch before you seek support. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

Again, I apologize for my ignorance (I've only been using Gentoo [and Linux in general] for a little less than a year now, and considering that I'm a convert from Windows XP, I certainly don't have much experience of the technical nitty-gritty variety from a previous OS), but how would I go about that? Does it have something to do with the new LiveCD released in December? Would I have to rebuild my system from scratch? Or am I just asking a bunch of questions that are answered somewhere else on the site that I simply haven't found yet? |

"While your FF and flash are up to date with ~arch, your system is not. In short, I'd say bring your box up to date with ~arch before seeking further support."
and what exactly does that for people finding this thread in the future? reinstalling? |

The portage tree as indicated in the pasted 'emerge --info' is in excess of one week out of date. It appears that they've never (or at least not in the last 6 months, for sure) updated world on that machine. Did you look at any of the version numbers in the paste? My stable machines have newer software than this.
Additionally, there's no swap whatsoever on a machine with only 1GB of RAM. I expect a bunch of compiles will simply fail.
The kernel is very old and hasn't been available in portage for quite some time, and I believe that version has security vulnerabilities too.
Reinstalling is rarely a solution, unless the install is too stagnant -- years and years of neglect. That doesn't appear to be the case here. |

I have had problems compiling some packages before (ex. LibreOffice and Enlightenment--though the latter may have been due to compatibility issues as well as a decrepit machine), and I am well aware how ancient my hardware is (it had Windows XP installed on it when I got it...). But at least my install isn't so old that I have to reinstall completely, judging from kurly's comment.
...So, how exactly am I supposed to fix my out of date kernel? Updating Portage with emerge --sync is easy enough, but I must confess that I've never actually undertaken any updates other than that simply because I didn't know how to do so, or that I needed to do so in the first place. |

In nutshell.
First, fix your CFLAGS. You have CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe -O2", much better is Code: | CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" |
Then emerge --sync (you are discouraged to run it several times a day, but once is OK).
Follow up with emerge -avuNDt world. Review carefully the output of this command, make sure all USE flags are the way you want them to be and commit. After emerge is finished read carefully it's output and do whatever is needed to finish the upgrade. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.
