I installed Gentoo base system. Then, i installed KDE 4
After the install I did -
rc-update add xdm default

After the restart when kde loads i get the welcome screen but my mouse and keyboard don't work.
How can i get to the command prompt instead of going to KDE?

Any help will be much appreciated

Hi,

Normal way would be to use cntr-alt-F1 ( or F2, .. ) to leave X and go to a shell .

You can remove xdm from the default runlevel (using the same command but then with 'remove' instead of ' add' ).
Then reboot, and you will end up with a shell. You can then start xdm manually using
Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm start

Alex.

Note1: if you cant do this because you do not have any shell access, use the install cd and chroot into your install.

Note2: I noticed some similar behavior with mouse and keyboard some time ago: They were only recognized after startind KDE by unplugging them and then plugging them back ( after xdm or KDE started).

You need a working keyboard for that. You could use interactive bootup or if it doesn't work login in single user mode.

Yes, that is why i say "the normal way". Indeed you can use interactive boot or single user, or as stated, chroot.

Did you have xf86-input-evdev installed? Looks like it missing

Adding nox to the kernel command line should stop kdm from starting. It does look like you missed evdev.
