Hello,
I installed gentoo on a webserver/work station several years ago and I am looking to bring the system kernel and packages up to date. The system I am currently running is:
Kernel:
2.6.29-gentoo-r2
Portage:
2.1.10.41
GCC:
4.3.3-r2
I am wondering if I my system is so old that I will have to follow the upgrade guide for 'old systems' given here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml#old_system. Or if I can simply update my profile, update portage and then run a deep upgrade of all installed packages.
Cheers.

I think it should be added that you are in for a rough time. Portage is too old to update itself at this point, glibc won't do a direct update, and you may or may not need to deal with updating to baselayout 2. Udev also has started doing funny things to your network names. You should pay attention to that as well.
That said, you may be ok if you read your portage output and triple check everything before you reboot. Your kernel is also too old for newer udev versions. That could be an issue. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

Thank you for the feedback. Sounds like its time for a fresh install. |
