prevent gnome-3 from starting without a /home directory

Q: Is it possible to configure gnome's start-up behaviour, so it refuses to start if the user's home directory doesn't exist? I'm no gnome-3.6 currently.

I'm currently using the wonderful pam_mount to mount my user /home directories on login via NFS. The way this works is that it creates and mounts your user dir e.g. /home/john.smith at login time, rather than system startup. When you log out, it then unmounts and deletes the user mountpoint, so only /home remains.

However, at times the network or NFS server may not be available. When this happens, by default gnome creates an empty user directory, e.g. /home/john.smith, and obviously a new gnome config, on the local hard disk. Which I then have to delete manually, because I don't want both a local home directory; I'm afraid I'll mistakenly delete the (remote) user dir one day when trying to remove this manually.

Anyway to prevent this behaviour?
