I have followed the guide here - http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/XVNC_Server - and have xvnc working to a degree, I can connect to my machine, but all I see is a solid grey screen.

Code:
~/.vnc/xstartup

#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
#xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
enlightenment_start

I havent set the xinetd part of it yet as I want to get it working first before I add automatic connections - if I require them, I had this issue before, and then it just started working.

Is there any advise people could give as I am a little stuck, I would like to get this working before I use clonezilla on it to image it up.

Do i need to run X directly first?

Looks to me that enlightenment_start fails. You'll need to find out why that is. If enlightenment_start is a script, look at what it does. Then start an xterm in the vnc session and use it to manually do the things enlightenment_start does. This I think has a high chance of telling you what exactly goes wrong.
