Hi,
whenever I startx I actually am transferred to the X server running Gnome, but the problems I'm facing are the following:
- the gnome panel takes about a minute to load
- when I click on the applications panel I see no applications (it's empty)

Did you put
Code:
exec gnome-session
into your ~/.xinitrc with additional parameters?
Anyway, could you provide more information? Are you on GNOME 2 or 3, light or full version...? Are you on the main package tree? Did you select a GNOME profile? And could you query portage for more information on GNOME?

Besides that, which packages of GNOME did you install? There are numerous ones. Please also see http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml
