I'm sorry to be asking this -- it seems like it ought to be an easy problem to resolve, but I am stumped...
I am using gentoo as a gateway pc for a home network. I have configured all computers with static ip's on the local network, and have them listed in /etc/hosts. I can ping all computers and can surf the net from any computer, but I am unable to access any computers on my LAN using dig or similar programs.
In other words, I can ping "localhost", but if I attempt "dig localhost" or "host localhost" I am told the computer can't be found. Appreciate any thoughts. |

dig and host do dns searches. If you just have the intranet machines only in /etc/hosts, dig and host will not be able to find them, AFAIK. If you are being served by an external DNS, it would not know about boxes on your private network.
Anyway, as long as you can ping them by name, you should be fine. Was there a reason you want to resolve their names through dig/host? |
