I'm not gonna go into details about the error I get, I've solved the problem on my laptop by issuing the 'eselect opengl set' to select the opengl implementation 'nvidia' instead of xorg implementation
the problem is not with my laptop, I can run games just fine now, it's with my desktop, I only have the xorg implementation of opengl and I'm unable to run games
I followed the dri guide "http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml"
I have the radeon modules built into mykernel and I have not emerged ati-drivers

should I emerge the ati-drivers?
what else do I need to do?

thanks

Which card?
Glxinfo reporting DRI rendering that's not software?
What error do you see?
What programs are you running?

I've found that wine games seems to work better with fglrx (ati-drivers) than the OSS Radeon driver but I have not tried my RadeonHD with OSS.

That is not to say OSS is bad, wine games work just fine with Intel built-in graphics with their OSS driver.

post or pastebin your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ... it should provide the clues needed to figure out why X isn't starting.
