localhost chrome # emerge -uav chromium

* IMPORTANT: 6 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.

* Last emerge --sync was 1y 195d 14h 2m 28s ago.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "dev-libs/libxml2[icu]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.8-r1::gentoo (Change USE: +icu)
(dependency required by "www-client/chromium-13.0.782.215" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "chromium" [argument])

This means chromium depends on libxml2 built with the icu use flag.

Do:
Code:
nano -w /etc/portage/package.use

Add the following line:
dev-libs/libxml2 icu

Save the file. Then try to emerge chromium.

For more info about the various messages displayed by portage, have a look
at the following page in the handbook (section 1.e. When Portage is Complaining...):

That's the biggest problem right there. You'll have endless problems emerging new packages on a system this out of date. In fact, this has reached the threshold that many people would recommend a reinstall as being easier than the update. I'd struggle through it, if I were you, though.

No, updating you system will also help. You remember those steps from the Working with Gentoo section of the Handbook, right? :wink:

However, the longer you let a Gentoo installation get out of date, the more the update process punishes you. If you get started and the problems (and there will be problems) look like they're more than you want to handle, a re-install is another option.
