Ok I'm back
Got working Gentoo (installed from scratch)
However made ethernet drivers as module and can't get networking started so had to recompile kernel with ethernet drivers as in built.
Now I've working Gentoo with networking
However still no X I've followed intel graphics guide properly.
Xorg.0.log just says "no devices detected"
I can't seem to find necessary information. |

What does xorgconfig do about setting up xorg.conf? And what settings do you have
for VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES in make.conf

Hey Will,
Thanks.
I've following settings in make.conf
VIDEO_CARDS="intel"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse"
Anyways I got X working , so the solution was to compile kernel with devtmpfs.
Now if I boot with this particular kernel (devtmpfs ON) I've working X.
I would like to know what is the purpose of devtmpfs and why do I need to switch it on.
Other thing is my ethernet doesn't work (maybe I need to modprobe) when I compile it as a module, so I compiled it in kernel and now ethernet is working.
So was that only modprobe issue?
I installed gnome and it was horribly ugly so went with xfce and I think I'm liking it
Still have wireless to fix.
Thanks a ton guys.
I'll search around internet some more for wireless else will start new thread |

The current udev needs DEVTMPFS, but I'm not sure why - it's part of a whole set of revisions
to the initial startup sequence.
Generally Ethernet should work as a module or a built-in, though mine are usually built in. I've
loaded them as modules in the past without problems.
