I know this should be easy, but I've given up searching for the answer, so I'll ask. How do I get xemacs to use fixed font and size 10 font? After a fresh install on a new machine, all I get is courrier 12.

You can check which fonts are installed on your system with fc-list command. You can also use graphical tool like xlsfonts.
In case of missing font eix media-fonts/ will tell you what you should emerge.
After that all you need to do is tell xemacs which font should be used in the .xemacs/init.el file, try this one for example:
Code:
(set-face-font 'default "-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-20-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-2")
(set-face-font 'bold "-b&h-lucidatypewriter-bold-r-normal-sans-16-*-*-*-m-*-iso8859-2")
(set-face-font 'italic "-b&h-luxi mono-medium-i-normal-*-16-*-*-*-m-*-iso8859-2")
(set-face-font 'buffers-tab "-urw-century schoolbook l-bold-r-normal-*-*-170-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2")

I never had to do this stuff on my olther machines. What has changed, and why? I've been running Gentoo since 2004 or 2005.

Is there something I need to do to make fonts available? I emerged media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi and media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi, but xemacs is not seeing them.

What do you mean by "xemacs do not see fonts", setting font in init.el doesn't work?
Other programs do see them?

No, I mean when I click on "options", then drag down to "fonts", it only shows "fixed", and when I drag down to "font size" it shows me a list of sizes, but no matter where I click, the size stays at 12 points.

The init.el file is used to pre-select the font and font size (among lots of other things), and is typically created by saving options after you have selected them, from the pull down menus.

Other machines I have xemacs installed on allow me to select different fonts and font sizes, and it actually works. There is something different going on here, and I suspect the installation process has been streamlined since the old days of the "sumo" file. :(
