I use dnsmasq's DHCP feature to assign to a local running user-mode-linux instanc a dynamic address (and BTW assign it a different domain suffix than the local domain suffix of my host system).
However sendmail seems to ignore dnsmasq and only accepts entries in /etc/hosts. Testing the user-mode linux hostname with "ping", "dig" and "host" however works.

Any suggestions ?

Hhm, it seems to be a sendmail.cf flaw rather than a simple DNS issue, :
Code:
2013-03-08T21:43:19.000+01:00 n22 sm-mta[32656]: r28KghNN032656: from=<tfoerste@n22unst4>, size=564, class=0, nrcpts=0, bodytype=7BIT, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=n22unst4.uml_domain [192.168.1.68]

2013-03-08T21:43:19.000+01:00 n22 sm-mta[32656]: r28KghNO032656: ruleset=check_mail, arg1=<tfoerste@n22unst4>, relay=n22unst4.uml_domain [192.168.1.68], reject=553 5.1.8 <tfoerste@n22unst4>... Domain of sender address tfoerste@n22unst4.n22_domain does not exist
b/c n22unst4.uml_domain is the correctly appended domain and resolved correctly, but why it is then looking for tfoerste@n22unst4.n22_domain instead of tfoerste@n22unst4.uml_domain
