Hi,
Just doing a Gentoo reinstall, and got X working with XFCE, but the resolution was awful. It was only displaying 1024x768. Anyway after trying to install the Nvidia drivers (8600GT card) X doesn't start at all. I don't know if this is a problem with part of the xorg config or a conflict with the nouveau drivers that have been installed. Here's the Xorg.0.log so any advice on where to proceed would be great.

It might be a problem with the name of the screen in the monitors file, but I can't run xrandr without X running.

It's complaining about KMS missing. And you do not need xorg.conf with nouveau and evdev, unless you want to fine tune something.

Just looked and KMS isn't supposed to be active for the proper nvidia drivers. How should I turn this off? Thanks,
Jim

If you want nvidia driver why your system is loading nouveau, it seems to be present? With nvidia you need minimal xorg.conf, four lines, mentioned hundreds of times in these forums.
