Millions of tons of food get wasted each year because the 'best before' date has passed.

Monday, March 04, 2013: Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, Universita di Catania in Italy, CEA-Liten and STMicroelectronics have invented a plastic analogue-digital converter (ADC) that can greatly reduce food waste worldwide.

Millions of tons of food get wasted each year because the 'best before' date has passed. But this date is always a cautious estimate, which means a lot of still-edible food is thrown away. Wouldn’t it be great if the packaging could ‘test’ whether the contents are still safe to eat?

it would be nice if we don't have to eat expired food :)

I usually don't take notice of best before dates on basic foods (milk, cheese, yogourt, veggies, bread). you can tell when those things are off pretty easily.

I am a little more freaked about more processed foods, as i don't really know what's going on with them. But my basic theory is that if it smells and tastes fine, it probably is.

The Swedes are at it again. First the Spaniards, and now the Swedes.

Okay, listen carefully Europeans: you put the food in the top hole, and you get rid of the stuff that comes out bottom hole. Mixing and matching not allowed.
