I can select and print to my CUPS printers in lowriter and korganizer,
but not claws-mail, firefox, evince, gimp or seemingly any other GTK
application. I used to be able to, I swear, but not now. Why can't I
see my CUPS printers in GTK Print dialogue boxes?

Code:
$ claws-mail --version
Claws Mail version 3.9.0

$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 17.0.3

$ evince --version
GNOME Document Viewer 2.32.0

$ gimp --version
GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.6.12

$ korganizer --version
Qt: 4.8.4
KDE Development Platform: 4.9.5
KOrganizer: 4.9.5

$ lowriter --version
LibreOffice 3.6

$ uname -r
3.5.4-vs2.3.4.3

$ lpstat -a
Epson accepting requests since Wed Oct 31 13:14:49 2012
HL2040 accepting requests since Wed Oct 31 13:41:32 2012

net-print/cups-1.5.2-r4

$ emerge -pv x11-libs/gtk+

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

If fairly sure you were correct.

My nightly emerge world came up with the following:
Quote:
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/timezone-data-2012j [2012f]
[ebuild U ] dev-lang/lua-5.1.5 [5.1.4-r8]
[ebuild R ] dev-libs/libIDL-0.8.14 USE="(-debug%)"
[ebuild R ] x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.12 USE="cups*"
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/libev-4.11-r1 USE="-static-libs"
[ebuild U ] media-sound/sox-14.4.1 [14.3.2-r1] USE="-twolame%"
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/libverto-0.2.5 USE="libev threads -glib -libevent -static-libs -tevent"
[ebuild U ] app-crypt/mit-krb5-1.11.1 [1.9.4-r1]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/hwids-20130302 [20130114]
[ebuild R ] dev-qt/qtscript-4.8.4 USE="jit*"

That is, gtk+-2.24.12 was not previously built with cups, whereas version 3 was.

Solved.

Thanks Uli Sing.
