Hello.

I've been given the task to remake an old site to use some newer technologies. A lot of things were done in a, let's say, suboptimal way. One of the was using swf just to show a simple static slideshow which could have been done perfectly with just js or an animated gif. I don't know much about the adobe stuff, other than the fact that it's been created to annoy users. I was wondering if there's some simple tools in portage that will convert swf to animated gif. If not, I guess I could just rip off the frames and join them again using gimp.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

I have done flv to gif rather efficiently thanks to media-video/avidemux.
I did not try with swf, but I think it'll work as well

As simple as : file-open then file-save as bmp.
Then you use whatever for assembling your bmps into an animated gif.

Being said that media-video/avidemux is now masked in portage for some somber stories regarding its embedded ffmpeg.
If you can work off-line, you should not worry about the security implications.
I simply unmasked it.

BTW, opt for the 2.5 version. 2.6 is still a bit young.

Hey that seems a far more efficient method!
Considerably less interactive but efficient.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you everyone for the ideas.

Unfortunately, I was already looking into ffmpeg, and all I manage to get is an undersized, wrongly-coloured gif. I will continue trying though. ffmpeg has lots of options.

I will also try avidemux. I don't like it because it's so damn buggy... But if it gets this job done then it's as good as any other.

Thank you :)
