I'm having some trouble playing videos with mplayer that were recorded using MythTV. I was recently going through some recordings which had been reencoded via mencoder (change do an avi, and reduce bitrate for smaller files), only to find that the video was solid black (audio seems to be working fine). Upon further testing, I saw that this has been happening since early November, but I hadn't noticed it until just yesterday.
So far I've tried disabling vdpau, rebuilding mplayer and ffmpeg. I've tried several vo drivers (xv,x11,gl,gl2,sdl). I've tried playing the recorded files directly, the re-encoded files, and the raw output from /dev/video0. I've tried including -vf scale as the output (below) suggested. All of these options have had the same behaviour.
MythTV and xine play the raw files fine, vlc and mplayer do not. (I would like to get mplayer working since I use mencoder to shrink the files for later use).
I'm using Hauppage PVR-250, mythtv 0.25.1_p20120622, mplayer-1.1-r1, ffmpeg-0.10.3, in-kernel ivtv drivers (3.6.11-gentoo).
