Hello everybody,

Since an update to gentoo-sources-3.7.9 my server is not booting anymore. I can failback to 3.6.11 which is no problem but I don't know what's wrong with the new kernel. All I can see in syslog is that amavisd has some problems to start:

Code:

Feb 23 18:35:25 obelix /etc/init.d/clamd[5179]: start-stop-daemon: failed to start `/usr/sbin/clamd'
Feb 23 18:35:25 obelix /etc/init.d/clamd[5184]: start-stop-daemon: failed to start `/usr/bin/freshclam'
Feb 23 18:35:25 obelix amavis[5201]: (!)run_command: child process [5201]: Can't open /dev/null: Permission denied at /usr/sbin/amavisd line 3503.
Feb 23 18:35:25 obelix amavis[5200]: starting. /usr/sbin/amavisd at obelix.roflcopter.biz amavisd-new-2.7.2 (20120629), Unicode aware, LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
Feb 23 18:35:26 obelix amavis[5200]: (!)_DIE: Cannot write /dev/null [Permission denied] at /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.4/Net/Server.pm line 157.
Feb 23 18:35:26 obelix /etc/init.d/amavisd[5190]: ERROR: amavisd failed to start
Feb 23 18:35:26 obelix klogd: NET: Registered protocol family 10
Feb 23 18:35:36 obelix ntpdate[5214]: step time server 131.188.3.221 offset 0.497268 sec
Feb 23 18:35:36 obelix crond[5232]: /usr/sbin/crond 4.5 dillon's cron daemon, started with loglevel notice

But that's all I can see in syslog. After that I restarted the server in rescue mode, booted the old kernel (3.6.11) and could boot the system again. Any ideas?

aZZe ...

somewhat of a guess, DEVTMPFS isn't enabled in the kernel, and so device nodes are not created (udev, which you may have also updated, now requires DEVTMPFS).

best ... khay
