Hi all,
This is a heads-up in case anyone else is having the issues I've been wrestling with since 4.10 hit the tree, having found a remarkably easy fix by pure chance.
The specific issues I've had are:
1) Certain desktop widgets (the hardware monitor in my case; I only use this and the folder view widget) were getting reset to their default size (i.e. very small) every time I logged in.
2) The rendering of the desktop, including widgets, task bar and K menu was very ugly - some supposedly-filled areas (such as the task bar background) were transparent, others were a different colour or transparency level from areas around them, drop shadows didn't reflect rounded corners...
Having spent hours on three different PCs rebuilding packages with different CFLAGS (trying -O0/1/2/3/s) and USE flags, I discovered by chance that, having temporarily disabled desktop effects on one of my systems, when I logged back in, the widget size was correct and the rendering was normal.
I've just tried this on another system and it's solved the problems again.
So, if you're having these issues, try disabling desktop effects with Alt-Shift-F12 then logging out and logging back in.
Hope this helps a few people...
