"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." Mahatma Gandhi.
If this happens, one of the biggest arguments against "the Linux Desktop" will have fallen.
We may never be the dominate OS (although one can always dream), but MS had their chance. They chose to play king of the mountain, never noticing the soil beneath their feet was slowly eroding away.
Phoronix -- Seems to have 404 issues
Softpedia -- working link.

On hand hand I think we must become the dominate OS... Destroy the window, then move in and eat the apple!! But on the other hand I think everything that becomes to big will become faggy too... _________________ "I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? Before this mind-flu spreads any further, the adjective is "dominant", not "dominate".

yeah. color me sceptical. office for OSX varies in subtle but frustrating ways from the Windows version.
plus they just released the online office thing so really a native port to loonix would be a fairly dumb direction. i suppose its possible that mass migrations away from windows to linux ( like the Munich project ) would beseech MS to want a linux port to at least keep their foothold over the document space.
and actually overall MS has transformed for the better, somewhat, in recent years specifically in what Azure supports and their Open Technology center.
i don't know though... i would advise against holding one's breathe. |

What the hell is it with people and "domination"? Linux is getting improved because there is a catchup to do, if there wasn't for apple and windows, it would still be like Solaris... |

I heard that the porcine aviation industry uses Linux and is set to be a major force in air travel this year. Or something. |

Solaris is cool and Linux hasn't improved because of that poor "mememe we must be better than our competitors" reason. Like I've read somewhere: Linux doens't want that everyone uses Linux, because no one makes money with it. If you ask: "why should I use Linux?" then you must know that Linux asks: "Why should I need you?"
Maybe some Distributions try to be as close as possible to MS/Apple but thats sad. Linux improves because people enjoy the work and the drive to build a better system comes from within, not from this poor and primitive competitor-thinking. And there isn't a catchup to do, because MS/Apple systems are bloated with senseless crap that even the most stupid idiot can work on such a system. Moreover because of the bloat-GUI stuff more and more people can't operate properly because it's way to complex (my mother didn't manage to install a printer, because even a printer is nowadays very complex although you just want to print something).
If Linux wants to "catch up" MS/Apple than those people that talk like "Linux is not a hacker system anymore, we should go to BSD" are right...

Thank you very very much! but I would appreciate it when you would support me here because maybe you agree with me (as an "oldschool-hardcore" dwm user )
The only reason Bill gates and Steve Jobs sold computers and OS is for money, Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman worked for a better understanding and to build cool systems... So we must destroy Apple and MS!!! Who's with me?

Competition authorities have been concerned at MS dominance in both the platform and the product on it for ages. But it is competition in the mobile and tablet market that has forced them to choose which area to try to maintain their dominance in, and they appear to have decided that the Office suite is the one to back. A good decision*. Better to dominate in one area than compete in several.
*not that I like Office, though I have to work with it every day. I mean it works fine, but all the features and options seem to get in the way of doing simple things and I gave up long ago bothering to find out what they all do, apart from having to work out how to turn them all off. |

Well, now, this would be interesting to see. I don't really believe it, on the other hand, with Steam coming to Linux, possibly dragging other Game publishers behind, it might be a smart move. _________________ Kali Ma

Native? Does that mean not using any Windows libraries, or does it mean basically what we have now (WINE and a bit of stuffing around) but with Microsoft's blessing and support?
I, too, am sceptical. |
