before the live dvd became so bloated that i cant run it on pretty much ANYTHING.... i remember seeing an auto installer, 'unwrap' is not against the gentoo philosophy, just as firefox-bin is not.... people give me guff for being unfaithful to portage and compiling my own sources by hand when ebuilds are poorly written and broken. ie fltk wont compile rakarrack thus it is not in the portage tree although it is ESSENTIAL to my survival. and i know 100% the ebuild is the problem, because i compiled fltk by hand and tested building rakarrack and built the latest.

Well, going outside of portage has its own set of problems, surely it would be much better/sensible to just fix the ebuilds by submit bugs and 'patches', or set up your own overlay like many do, so others can benefit.
