MPD status in dwm bar

I followed this guide to pipe some info to my dwm status bar: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dwm#Conky_statusbar

I then followed the Gentoo guide for installing mpd, and am using ncmcpp as a frontend for mpd.

When dwm starts, I have all the info I want on my status bar which is the volume level and the date and time. However, where I wanted to display my mpd status, all it says is, ${mpd_status}. I tried putting $mpd_smart as well as ${mpd_status} in my conkyrc. Am I missing something here? More specifically, how do I get the status bar to display what mpd is playing?
