hi all
got meself a nice scsi 9GB Seagte hard drive and adaptec 2940au host adaptor
After installing both, booted up, after normal IDE detection, got SCSI BIOS screen
Went in, checked and formatted drive
Did cursory check of extra adaptor setiings (automatic terminate, etc)
Didn't fully expect this to work, but thought I'd get further than I did
Rebooted, same as above, didn't CTRL-A to go to the SCSI BIOS, then
this prints:
SCSIID 0
DEVICE IBM (model number comes up)
!#
The !# doesn't look good
It hangs, and hangs. I've retried, tried using different bootloader, changing the order of boot in the BIOS, tried turning everything onboard off
It doesn't seem to be problems with the bootloader (though I am sure that's round the corner , the drive itself seems OK (as I said, checking for errors and low-level formatting both worked OK)
lspci says
/sbin/lspci -v | grep SCSI
00:0d.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7861 (rev 03)
any thoughts?
george

(edit)
after searching adaptec's site it turns out that
Quote: | Some SCSI devices may take a longer than normal to arrive at a ready state. This is the time period between the powering on of the computer and when the device reports to the SCSI card it is in a ready condition.
If this is the case, the original AHA-2940AU v1.21 BIOS may not scan and find the device, within the time period allowed by the BIOS of the SCSI card.
Adaptec has increased the scan time within the BIOS and this issue may be corrected, for some devices by upgrading the AHA-2940AU BIOS to v1.30 or v1.32. The latest and last Bios for an AHA-2940AU SCSI card that contains Bios version 1.21 is version 1.32
From more information about BIOS upgrades, please view article number 2386, simply Click Here.
| but also that Quote: |
Note: The BIOS ROM chip on the AHA-2940AU is not a Flash ROM. | so i can't flash it
disabling the BIOS for the host adaptor got it booting - now i just have to get it mounted. i can't boot off it - but i didn't want to anyway [/quote] |
