|
|
I have had no success at getting Gentoo 3.7.2 to output sound to my headphones. I have confirmed that Windows does so, so the hardware is not faulty. The symptom is nil sound output from speaker-test (or any other application I would expect to produce sound). aplay appears to recognise my sound card:
Code: |
# aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

speaker-test without arguments gives an error:
Code: | # speaker-test

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels

Channels count (1) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument |
Specifying the "sysdefault:CARD=Intel" device produces what I take to be normal speaker-test text output, but no sound:
Code: | # speaker-test -D sysdefault:CARD=Intel
speaker-test 1.0.26
Playback device is sysdefault:CARD=Intel

My sound "card" is built into an ASUS P5Q Deluxe motherboard. My NVIDIA video card also has some sound output capability, but that is not in use:

Restarting alsasound gives an error message that might be significant.
Code: | # alsasound restart

Googling reveals that lack of support for the front audio connectors of ASUS P5Q* boards is a known problem with Linux. I worked around the problem by plugging my headset into the rear audio connectors. The problem with my default audio device persists. aplay and speaker-test produce silence unless the option "-D sysdefault:CARD=Intel" is passed. gmplayer produces sound. In Firefox Windows Media plugin produces sound but gecko-mediaplayer produces silence. Skype 4.1 produced sound with the default settings. |

A few points:
1. The audio device (Intel HDA) you have is very common and thus should work under Linux - you may need to do some work, but it should work well enough. See below for some suggestions.
2. Often the BIOS passes wrong or confusing information about capabilities of the audio device. This can be corrected by forcing a correct "model". Please look at kernel documentation for list of models Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt. Also look at Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt
Models can either be as options to kernel at boot time or changed on the fly if appropriate options are set (CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y). Again look at HD-Audio.txt
3. Kernel support for Intel HDA is undergoing significant changes, which may not be merged into the main kernel until 3.9. It has fixed my problem with HDA sound. It also contains numerous improvements. You can get the latest changes from the sound-unstable tree:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound-unstable.git
4. You may also try to downgrade your kernel. 3.7 is known to have ALSA issues. |

Thanks mhodak. I'll look at the options available when I have more time. At the moment it is sort of working well enough to put up with. I'll turned on SND_DEBUG and recompile my kernel to see if that tells me anything. |
