There is a flood of cheap Chinese mobiles here, which have some of the most impressive specs available. Now, almost any electronic device is made in China, so this is a moot point really but can you have dual purpose chips which can do the regular things a chip is supposed to do and also snoop on you?

Would you even need a hardware to do that? You could quite easily hide that in software or even firmware, can't you? Also, what are the odds of such a thing happening?

These cheap Chinese mobiles have dual-core CPUs and dual-sim capabilities and run Android ICS just fine, even better in some cases, than their more expensive branded cousins. What if this was a Chinese conspiracy to spy on a vast mass of population outside of their own county to collect credit card information, contacts, passwords?

And also, is there a way to find out the Android version installed in these Chinese phones, are hiding snooping software or bug?

In EU we don't have too worry about that - phone operators must store phone call history and text messages anyway.

Of-course. All phones have the same components, procured from the same manufacturers so it really doesn't make any sense for a label to charge a premium.

But, you never know what comes with this affordability.

I meant the environment, but that works too.
